Article Processing Charges (APC) Policy
Civil and Geoengineering Letters operates a Gold Open Access publishing model. There are no fees for manuscript submission, initial editorial assessment, peer review, revision, or editorial decision. Authors are not required to make any payment for a manuscript to be considered, peer-reviewed, or accepted for publication.
Publication Fees
To support authors during the early development of the journal, no Article Processing Charge (APC) is payable for articles submitted and accepted for publication on or before 31 December 2026.
From 1 January 2027, the following APCs will apply to manuscripts formally accepted for publication (exclusive of any applicable taxes):
- Research Articles: €1,050 (or equivalent in local currency)
- Research / Technical Notes: €850 (or equivalent in local currency)
- Short Communications: €250 (or equivalent in local currency)
The APC becomes payable only after a manuscript has successfully completed the journal’s editorial and peer-review process and has been formally accepted for publication. There are no submission fees, editorial assessment fees, peer-review fees, revision fees, page charges, colour charges, or other mandatory charges in addition to the applicable APC stated above.
What the APC Supports
The APC contributes to the costs associated with the publication and operation of the journal. These include editorial administration and manuscript management, copyediting, language and technical checks where applicable, typesetting and formatting, proofreading, online publication and hosting, website and publishing-platform maintenance, DOI registration and metadata management, and the technical infrastructure required to provide continuous online access to published articles.
The APC is a publication charge and does not constitute payment for peer review or editorial acceptance. Reviewers are not paid from an individual author’s APC, and payment does not confer any entitlement to acceptance or preferential editorial treatment.
Editorial Independence
All editorial decisions are made independently of financial considerations. Editors and reviewers involved in the academic assessment of a manuscript are not influenced by an author’s ability or willingness to pay an APC. Decisions to accept, revise, or reject a manuscript are based solely on its academic quality, originality, methodological rigour, relevance to the journal’s scope, and compliance with applicable ethical and editorial requirements.
No APC is requested or collected before formal acceptance. The consideration of a manuscript for publication is therefore independent of the payment process.
APC Waivers and Discounts
Civil and Geoengineering Letters recognises that authors may have different levels of access to institutional or research funding. Authors who are unable to meet the applicable APC may request a full or partial waiver before the article enters the production process. Requests must include a brief explanation of the circumstances for which financial support is sought.
Waiver and discount requests are considered on the basis of demonstrated financial need, the availability of institutional or research funding, and, where relevant, the economic circumstances of the country in which the corresponding author is primarily affiliated. Any waiver or discount granted applies only to the APC for the relevant article and does not affect the editorial or peer-review process.
Authors should submit waiver or discount requests to the journal’s administrative office after formal acceptance and before payment is made. Such requests are handled separately from the academic assessment of the manuscript. Editors and reviewers responsible for the editorial decision are not involved in assessing an author’s financial circumstances.
Payment and Applicable Taxes
Where an APC applies, payment instructions are issued only after formal acceptance. The published APC amounts are exclusive of any taxes that may be required by applicable law. Where payment is made in an approved local currency, the payable amount will be calculated using the journal’s applicable exchange rate at the time the invoice is issued.
Withdrawal and Additional Charges
The journal does not charge authors for withdrawing a manuscript before formal acceptance. No withdrawal fee is imposed during submission, editorial assessment, peer review, or revision. Once an article has been formally accepted and has entered production, any request for withdrawal will be considered in accordance with the journal’s publication ethics and withdrawal procedures. No separate withdrawal charge exceeding the applicable APC will be imposed.
Refund Policy
APCs are normally non-refundable once an accepted article has entered production and publication services have commenced. Where the journal is unable to proceed with publication for reasons attributable to the journal or publisher, the circumstances will be reviewed individually and an appropriate refund, including a full refund where no publication service can be provided, may be issued.
Open Access
Payment of an APC, where applicable, enables the journal to make the final published article immediately and freely available online without subscription or access charges. Articles are published under the journal’s stated open-access licence, allowing use and reuse in accordance with the applicable licensing terms.
